Join together to encourage Sunnyvale, CA, to create a Dark Sky Ordinance.

We know that protecting darkness at night is good for all life.  Too much light in Sunnyvale is unnecessary and harms the health of wildlife and people.  We can do better.  We can create a future that is more ecological, more aesthetically pleasing, and which still provides security.

Why

Light pollution threatens every species, including ours. It’s also easy to fix.

Responsible outdoor lighting

  • Meets the needs of people to see at night

  • Conserves energy

  • Avoids harmful effects on wildlife

  • Protects our night sky

Light Pollution in Sunnyvale is real.

Astronomers working at the Lick Observatory are having a harder and harder time seeing the night sky. In this photograph, you can see 101 North with the Twin Creek Sports Complex on the edge of the Bay.

Light pollution makes it harder for birds to navigate using the stars and makes it hard for insects, their main food source, to thrive.

Help Sunnyvale do the right thing.

Vice Mayor, Linda Sell, said that we need over 100 people in order to get anything done on dark sky. Whether you’re more comfortable signing our letter below, writing your own letter, or speaking at a city council meeting, we need you!

“People don’t understand that wildlife operate on the barest of margins. . . Something like trampling their nest or leaving trash out can result in dead animals or a loss of habitat or scaring an animal who doesn’t have a lot of energy reserves to begin with.”
